James’ story
James had a dilemma – moving away from his mother, to progress his career, left him worrying for her future.
As his mother’s carer, James found the decision to move away from her very difficult – but had no choice, as this was a great opportunity to progress in his career.
James visited his mother most days during the week to assist her with day-to-day activities.
Aware that his mother wasn’t getting any younger – as she was 70 years old with several health issues – James worried about her coping once he moved away.
Thinking long-term, James started to research care homes for his mother. Baffled by the minefield of information online, he eventually came across an advert for ‘Peace of Mind – Care Navigator’, a service that specialises in finding care for a loved one.
James rang Peace of Mind and spoke to one of the team; he explained his situation and they said they would be happy to help – and arranged for James to speak to one of the in-house nurses. Prior to the call to Peace of Mind, James had felt distressed and worried about his mother’s future.
“I searched online for a suitable care home but found so much conflicting information it made the process confusing and stressful. Knowing I could receive help and support from a nurse made me feel more confident in the decision I was making.”
James spoke to one of the Peace of Mind nurses over the phone; she took details about his mother –including her current health and home situation.
The call was relaxed and informal and, after speaking with the nurse, James concluded that extra support and adaptations in his mother’s own home would be the best option of care for his mother.
James was very pleased with this option as his mother would be able to remain in her own home – but still have the care and support she needed.
The Peace of Mind team then arranged for an occupational therapist to go and visit James’ mother in her home to carry out a needs assessment – to establish what care/aids and adaptations would be required.
Once the assessment was carried out, the information was passed back to the Peace of Mind team who then contacted James to see how they could assist further and find out how his mother was getting on since the visit.
